bibo:abstract "Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an important food legume in\r\nEthiopia. Its production is challenged by low productivity of landraces,\r\npoor farming practices, and biotic and abiotic stresses,\r\namong others. To address these challenges, EIAR has partnered\r\nwith CGIAR centers and developed improved chickpea varieties,\r\nalong with integrated crop management technologies that have\r\nincreased productivity. Central to these efforts is the Tropical\r\nLegumes Projects (TL) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates\r\nFoundation. Since the inception of the Tropical Legume project\r\nin 2007, six ‘kabuli’ and five ‘desi’ chickpea varieties have been\r\nreleased. TL project also supported efforts to avail high-quality\r\nseed of improved varieties to many small holder farmers through\r\nparticipatory variety selection and demonstration activities.\r\nEighteen farmers’ seed producer associations have been established\r\nto fill up supply gaps for high quality seed. Seed production\r\nof improved chickpea varieties from 2008 to 2015 amounts\r\nto 50t breeder, 788t basic and 14,495.47t certified/Quality Declared\r\nSeed. The national average production and productivity of\r\nchickpea has increased by 60% and 51%, respectively, over the\r\nsame period coupled with 16% growth in export volume. Chickpea\r\nimprovement program is currently focusing on disease resistance,\r\ndrought and heat tolerance, mechanical harvesting and\r\nherbicide tolerance to cope up with the changing climate and the\r\nneed of specific production corridors."^^xsd:string;
