"Groundnut (Arachis hypogeal L.) is an important oilseed crop,\r\nmainly grown by smallholder farmers on 839,631 ha in four\r\nagro-ecological zones (Lake, central, western and southern) of\r\nTanzania. The average yield is 965kg/ha with a national production\r\nof 810,000 tons. The major production constraints are\r\nfoliar diseases (rosette, early leaf spot, late leaf spot, and rust),\r\ndrought, aflatoxin contamination, and low soil fertility. This paper\r\nexplores the advances made in a breeding program to solve\r\nthese challenges. The genotype by environment interaction with\r\nlinkage to good agronomic practices, using effective selection\r\nmolecular tools, was used and significant achievements were\r\nrecorded. Eight improved varieties were released with support\r\nfrom ICRISAT-led programs. The newly-released varieties command\r\nhigh-yielding ability (1800-2500 kg/ha), and tolerance to\r\nrosette disease and drought, and are highly preferred by farmers\r\nand market. The improved varieties increased yields and productivity\r\nat the farm level and groundnut production from 400,000-\r\n810000 tons over the last 10 years.\r\nEffective seed delivery to smallholder farmers did not automatically\r\nfollow. The Tropical Legumes Project, through NARI,\r\ndesigned rural seed fairs which are used to create awareness,\r\nincrease accessibility, and create working contacts among community\r\nseed producers. Other seed delivery models tested and\r\nused include: farmer research groups, demonstrations, field\r\ndays, community seed production, radio and TV events, political\r\nfigures’ engagement and multi-stakeholder engagements. These\r\nmodels have raised awareness, increased demand of improved\r\nseed, and enhanced smallholder seed supply at affordable price\r\nwith a significant number of beneficiaries reached (1,600,000\r\nfarmers)"^^ .
