"The West and Central Africa region accounts for more than 70%\r\nof the groundnut production in Africa. The crop is challenged by\r\nvarious biotic and abiotic production constraints with drought\r\nbeing the main abiotic constraint. ICRISAT has been working\r\nwith national breeding programs to develop improved groundnut\r\nvarieties. The approach used included identifying sources of\r\nresistance, developing populations, evaluating in target environments\r\nand releasing improved farmer preferred varieties for production.\r\nThe Tropical Legumes project initiated in 2007 has been\r\ninstrumental in strengthening the breeding program in the region.\r\nNine drought resistant/tolerant accessions were identified\r\nfrom evaluation of the mini core collections, and these accessions\r\nhave been utilized as parents in crossing programs. Since\r\n2007, ICRISAT distributed more than 1000 advanced breeding\r\nlines to national programs. Farmer participatory variety selection\r\nwas found very useful for fast track release and adoption of improved\r\nvarieties. Twenty two varieties have been released/registered\r\nacross the region as a result of project efforts (4 in Ghana,\r\n5 in Mali, 4 in Niger, 3 in Nigeria and 6 in Senegal). These varieties\r\nare high yielding (yield advantage of >20%) with resistance\r\nor tolerance to drought and major diseases. Currently, efforts\r\nare underway to improve the efficiency of breeding programs\r\nand to enhance genetic gain. These include designing product\r\npipelines based on traits of breeding interest; reducing generation\r\nadvancement process of breeding populations by growing\r\n2 to 3 generations per year; integrating modern genomic tools;\r\ndigitizing data collection, analysis, management and sharing by\r\nusing BMS; and enhancing the skills of breeders and technicians."^^ .
