"Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is one of the most important legume\r\ncrop, ranking fifth in importance among edible legumes globally.\r\nIt is adversely affected by intermittent and terminal droughts.\r\nAs grain yield under drought is heavily influenced by genotype\r\n× environment interactions, a trait-based selection had been\r\nconsidered more beneficial in drought tolerance breeding. The\r\nobjective of this study is to identify putative traits that confer\r\nyield advantages under post-flowering drought stress. Fifteen\r\nsuper early and early genotypes including breeding and germplasm\r\nlines, as a subset of greater number of test genotypes\r\nwere field evaluated for pre and post-harvest physiological and\r\nagronomical traits. Significant variation was observed, among\r\nthe genotypes, for the traits normalized difference vegetation\r\nindex (NDVI) and SPAD chlorophyll meter reading, measured at\r\ndifferent days after sowing at the reproductive phase, shoot biomass\r\nproductivity, and yield components. Genotype × drought\r\ntreatment interactions were found to be meager, especially in\r\nsuper early lines. Grain yield under drought was closely associated\r\nwith NDVI measured at podfilling stage (r=0.86***), shoot\r\nbiomass at maturity, harvest index (HI) and yield components.\r\nThough the genotypic variation in SPAD chlorophyll reading was\r\nlarge, its correlation with grain yield under drought was not significant.\r\nNDVI, a high throughput measure, was found to be significantly\r\ncorrelated with the other putative traits such as shoot\r\nbiomass (r=0.91***), HI, pod number m-2 and seed number\r\nm-2 and therefore, can be used as a proxy in identifying better\r\ndrought tolerant lines in crop improvement for early and super\r\nearly pigeonpea."^^ .
