bibo:abstract "Heat is one of the major abiotic stresses that adversely affect\r\ncrop production worldwide at different stages of development.\r\nGroundnut is a major crop cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical\r\nregions where high temperature stress is a serious constraint\r\nfor its production. In the present study, temperature induction\r\nresponse (TIR) was conducted for screening the tolerant genotypes,\r\nwhere the seedlings were exposed to sublethal temperature\r\nfrom 34ºC-54ºC for 4 hours 30 minutes followed by lethal\r\ntemperature at 58ºC for 3 hours. From the 100 diverse genotypes\r\nscreened, 24 showed tolerance to high temperature with mean\r\npercent seedling survival of 92%, 30 showed moderate tolerance\r\nand 46 were identified as temperature susceptible compared\r\nwith checks (100% survival). Results suggested that TIR is used\r\nto identify stable thermotolerant genotypes and could be explored\r\nas donor source useful in breeding programmes. Further\r\nwork will be focused on the physiological and molecular basis of\r\nthermotolerance in selected tolerant and susceptible genotypes\r\nfor the identification of heat stress tolerant genes which could\r\nbe useful for engineering plants with improved heat tolerance."^^xsd:string;
