"Promising agronomic crop traits could be more accessible to\r\nbreeding if we understood their underlying plant processes and\r\nknew their genetics determinacy. Here, we attempt to progress\r\nunderstanding of the functional linkages between traits using\r\nPCA and quantitative trait loci (QTL) co-localization approach. A\r\nrecombinant inbred lines (RIL; 181 progenies) population derived\r\nfrom a cross between senescent (N13) and stay-green(E36-1)\r\nparental lines was selected. This population was previously\r\nshown to segregate for stay-green expression and Striga resistance\r\nin the field. Here it was phenotyped for: (i) grain size\r\nvariability under optimal field conditions; (ii) traits related to\r\nearly-vigor (canopy size and growth rate) in a high-throughput\r\nphenotyping platform. Most traits had high heritability (>60%).\r\nLinkage map was constructed (271 molecular markers) and QTL\r\nanalysis (Cartographer 2.5) performed using composite interval\r\nmapping function. Two major QTLs influencing canopy size were\r\nfound on SBI04 and SBI05. The SBI05 QTL harboring canopy\r\nsize co-localized with the grain size QTL and with the genetic\r\nregion of stg-4 (stay green) QTL (responsible for leaf size distribution).\r\nThis links the vigor traits to the variability in grain size\r\nand leaf development (i.e. stay-green mechanism) the latter\r\npossibly explaining the variability in grain size. Since grain size\r\npartially regulates grain nutrients profile, such linkage calls for\r\nfurther exploration in breeding. The SBI-04 QTL for canopy size\r\nco-localized with QTLs for Striga resistance, strengthening the\r\nhypothesis that plant vigor enhances Striga resistance. Vigor appears\r\nto explain several traits and could be rapidly screened at\r\nthe LeasyScan facility."^^ . "2017-02" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "S"^^ . "Deshpande"^^ . "S Deshpande"^^ . .
