"Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), like most cultivated crops, has exceedingly\r\nnarrow genetic and phenotypic diversity. Thus breeding\r\nwith only cultivated germplasm will have steeply diminishing\r\nreturns, raising an urgent need for new sources of diversity. The\r\nfocus of the research was to assess a representative set of newly\r\ncollected wild accessions of C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum,\r\nfor drought adaptation traits, i.e. transpiration rate (TR)\r\nresponse to increasing VPD and to soil drying.\r\nThese experiments were conducted during the spring season\r\n(18 March to 21 April 2016) at the Dicle University glasshouse.\r\nThe experimental design was a complete randomised block\r\ndesign with six replications. Measurements were conducted\r\nin late April during vegetative growth and VPD changed from\r\n2.13 to 4.35 kPa. To measure TR, potted plants were weighed\r\nat regular time intervals over the course of an entire day, and\r\ntherefore, under increasing VPD. At the end of the experiment\r\ntotal leaf area was destructively measured, along with shoot,\r\nroot and leaf dry weights. There was a 2.31-fold range of variation\r\nin the transpiration response among genotypes. The wild\r\ngenotypes Sirnak and Deste had extreme TR values exceeding\r\ncultivated check cultivars, and several wild genotypes had only\r\na moderate increase in TR under increasing VPD. These moderate\r\nTR responses provide germplasm sources with a potential\r\nto limit water losses under high evaporative demand, akin to a\r\nprotection mechanism, especially under dry environments or in\r\nfuture climates. These screenings, therefore, open an exciting\r\nopportunity for breeding cultivars with enhanced performance\r\nunder harsh climates."^^ . "2017-02" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
