"This article aims to evaluate sorghum grain yields, cash income\r\nas well as risk-efficient choice associated with treatments of\r\nsorghum under the Africa RISING project in Mali. The analysis\r\nused the survey data related to on-farm trials covering the seasons\r\n2014 and 2015. Four treatments have been experimented\r\nfor sorghum including control treatment, treatment with only\r\nmanure, treatment with mineral fertilizer, and treatment with\r\nmanure and mineral fertilizer. Stochastic dominance analysis\r\nwas used to evaluate the cumulative distributions of grain yields\r\nand cash income associated with each treatment. The results\r\nshowed that the control treatment for sorghum is dominated by\r\nthe manure and fertilizer treatments. The manure and mineral\r\nfertilizer treatment has higher yields and net returns compared\r\nto the three other treatments. The control treatment has a 50%\r\nchance of generating grain yields up to 850 kg/ha, while the\r\nmanure treatment, mineral fertilizer treatment, and manure and\r\nmineral fertilizer treatment have the same probability of generating\r\nrespectively 1,050 kg/ha, 1,275 kg/ha, and 1500 kg/ha.\r\nThe net returns were estimated to US$ 122 for manure and mineral\r\nfertilizer treatment, US$ 87 for treatment with only mineral\r\nfertilizer, and US$ 84 for treatment with only manure. The cumulative\r\ndistribution of manure and mineral fertilizer treatment\r\nwas to the right of the remaining cropping treatments, indicating\r\nthat manure and mineral fertilizer treatment provides higher\r\nreturns to smallholder farmers than the alternative treatments\r\nfor a given risk level.
