Their\r\nresources vary widely and are affected by natural and\r\nanthropogenic perturbations. Ancient civilizations and\r\ncultures emerged and sustained on good soils; and some\r\nof them went into oblivion when soil and water resources\r\nwere degraded irreversibly. Even during the contemporary\r\nperiod, good-quality soil and water resources form a\r\npowerful engine of economic development and ensured\r\nfood security.\r\nThe impact of degradation of these two natural resources\r\nin terms of impairment in their physical, chemical\r\nand biological properties has attracted the attention of\r\nresearchers in recent years. It is observed that the major\r\nsoil types in the Indian semi-arid environment with mean\r\nannual rainfall of < 1000 mm are becoming calcareous\r\nwith concomitant development of sodicity.
