"The Center of Excellence in Genomics (CEG) of ICRISAT (ceg.\r\nicrisat.org) will complete its first 10 years in December 2017. The\r\ngenesis of CEG goes back to a grant entitled ‘Centre of Excellence\r\nfor High-throughput Allele Determination for Molecular\r\nBreeding’ under the Center of Excellence (CoE) scheme of the\r\nDepartment of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India given\r\nto ICRISAT mainly to provide genotyping services for SSR and\r\nDArT markers and training to NARS researchers in 2007. The\r\nCenter of Excellence (CoE) was subsequently institutionalised\r\nby ICRISAT as a research, service and training centre, with three\r\nmajor modules : (i) Applied Genomics & Molecular Breeding, (ii)\r\nSequencing and Genotyping Services, and (ii) Capacity Building.\r\nCEG serves as a cost-effective genomics platforms for scientists\r\nand research staff from different Themes/Research Programmes\r\nof ICRISAT as well as NARS partners. The CEG has 184 collaborators\r\nfrom 35 countries in six continents.\r\nIn 2007, the availability of genomic resources was very limited\r\nin ICRISAT mandate crops. Therefore, CEG scientists, in\r\ncollaboration with researchers from ICRISAT and national/international\r\norganisations, initiated efforts to develop large-scale\r\nmolecular markers, transcript sequence data, genetic, transcript\r\nand physical maps, cost-effective and high-throughput marker\r\ngenotyping platforms, as well as decoding genome sequences\r\nof ICRISAT mandate crops. While analysing the sequence, a\r\nnumber of computational genomics tools and databases were\r\ndeveloped. Furthermore, in collaboration with scientists/staff\r\nfrom ICRISAT and partners from Asia and Africa, the genomics\r\nresearch was translated successfully into developing superior\r\nlines in several ICRISAT mandate crops. In terms of service,\r\nCEG was offering initially SSR and DArT genotyping services and\r\nthen subsequently SNP and sequencing services at cost-to-cost\r\nbasis. To empower the research and breeding community, CEG\r\norganised several training courses, many national and international\r\nworkshops/symposia/conferences, and hosted several research\r\nscholars/post-docs/visiting scientists. The CEG has been\r\nvisited by a number of high-profile personalities from science,\r\npolitics, and donor and government organisations. CEG scientists,\r\ntogether with colleagues from ICRISAT and outside, have\r\nbeen successful in mobilising more than US$96 million and published\r\n353 scientific articles, including nine in Nature journals,\r\nwith 12,000 citations.
