At cellular level, sodium toxicity\r\ncan be sensed by plasma ion transporters, membrane proteins,\r\nand Na+ sensitive enzymes. In the present study, a full-length\r\ncDNA homologue of salt overly sensitive1 (SbNHXLP) gene\r\nwas isolated from Sorghum bicolor, and its overexpression in tomato\r\nplants lead to less Na+ and more K+accumulation in root\r\nand flower tissues indicating that it helps in proper ion homeostasis.\r\nCambial activity and increased xylogenesis have been\r\nnoticed under salt stress in transgenic root and stem tissues\r\nunlike that of untransformed controls. In silico protein-protein\r\ninteraction studies of NHXLP revealed hypothetical interactions\r\nwith several sodium proton antiporter (NHX and SOS)\r\nand cation proton antiporter (CHX) proteins. Co-immunoprecipitation\r\nfollowed by MALDI-TOF analysis showed that\r\nNHXLP protein interacts in vitro with one of the cation proton\r\nantiporter (CPA) family members CHX2, belonging to CPA1\r\nfamily. Comparative genomics helped in knowing the evolutionary\r\nhistory by studying the phylogenetic distance, divergence\r\nand synteny of Sodium transporters between sorghum,\r\nmaize and rice. This information would be useful in selecting\r\ncandidate genes for functional validation in relation to abiotic\r\nstress tolerance during various developmental phases in crop\r\nspecies Thus, SbNHXLP gene appears to be associated with\r\nNa+ exclusion at the plasma membrane and helps the tomato\r\ntransgenics to ameliorate salt stress."^^ .
