"Endowed with several unique characteristics, pigeonpea [Cajanus\r\ncajan (L.) Millsp.] holds a prominent position in farm\r\nhouseholds of semi-arid and arid regions of the world. With\r\nthe advent of hybrid pigeonpea technology, pigeonpea, once\r\ndesignated as orphan crop, has grown in importance as a commercial\r\ncrop. Thus, development of more number of quality\r\nhybrid varieties has become imperative to meet the future demand.\r\nThe present study was taken up to elicit the information\r\non magnitude of the genetic variability, heritability, genetic\r\nadvance as percent of mean, extent of fertility restoration\r\nand heterosis in newly developed CMS based pigeonpea hybrids.\r\nTwenty four pigeonpea hybrids along with four checks\r\nviz., Asha, Maruti, LRG 41 and BDN 711, were evaluated in kharif\r\n2015 at ICRISAT, Patancheru. Analysis of variance showed\r\nsignificant differences among the hybrids for all the characters\r\nstudied. High genetic variability coupled with high heritability\r\nand genetic advance as percent of mean were recorded for\r\nnumber of primary branches, number of secondary branches\r\nand pollen fertility percent. Fertility restoration studies showed\r\nthat 15 out of 24 hybrids recorded high (>80 %) pollen fertility\r\nand exhibited better fertility restoration. High levels of heterosis\r\ni.e. over 50% in traits like number of pods per plant, pod\r\nweight per plant and grain yield per plant. were also recorded.\r\nICPH 3762 and ICPH 4502, with high per se performance and\r\nhigh standard heterosis for grain yield per plant and for majority\r\nof yield attributes, were identified as promising hybrids."^^ .
