"Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) currently ranks first among oilseed\r\ncrops in China in terms of annual production, average crop\r\nand oil yield, and total crop value. Aflatoxin contamination has\r\nbeen a crucial concern for food safety and market competitiveness\r\nin groundnut products in most warm regions where heat\r\nand drought stresses are generally serious. Genetic enhancement\r\nfor resistance to aflatoxin has been regarded as the most\r\ncost-effective approach to reduce contamination risk in this\r\ncrop. Based on continuous evaluation of groundnut germplasms,\r\nincluding the core collections from China, ICRISAT and USA,\r\nseveral lines have been identified as resistant to Aspergillus infection\r\nor aflatoxin production. Recently, more research efforts\r\nhave been made in identifying materials with shell resistance to\r\nAspergillus infection, through cooperation with ICRISAT. Efforts\r\nhave also been made in identifying and enhancing germplasm\r\nlines with diverse resistance components or mechanisms. Several\r\nICRISAT breeding lines have been used in improving aflatoxin\r\nresistance of groundnut in Chinese institutions. An elite cultivar\r\ndeveloped at OCRI-CAAS, Zhonghua 6, with desirable resistance\r\nto aflatoxin production, bacterial wilt and pot rot has been\r\nextensively used in central China. Through RNA-seq profiling, it\r\nwas found that relative higher resveratrol content in Zhonghua 6\r\nwas a key mechanism for its reduced aflatoxin production under\r\nhigh infection pressure of Aspergillus sp."^^ .
