"Integrative genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to understand complex genetic architecture of quantitative traits in chickpea"^^ . "Development of high-yielding stress-tolerant chickpea cultivars\r\nis essential to enhance its yield potential and productivity amidst\r\nclimate change scenario. Unfortunately, superior lines/recombinants\r\nproducing higher pod and seed yield under stress are not\r\navailable in world chickpea collection. Therefore, genetic dissection\r\nof complex stress tolerance and yield-contributing quantitative\r\ntraits is the prime objective in current chickpea genomics\r\nand breeding research. Our study employed diverse GWAS-assisted\r\nintegrated genomic strategies involving classical genetic\r\ninheritance analysis, QTL mapping, differential transcript profiling,\r\nmolecular haplotyping and haplotype-based gene domestication/\r\nevolution study for rapid quantitative dissection of complex\r\nyield and stress tolerance traits in chickpea. To accomplish\r\nthis, multi-location/years replicated yield traits-related field\r\nphenotyping and high-throughput marker genotyping information\r\ngenerated from numerous natural germplasm accessions\r\n(association panel) and multiple intra- and inter-specific mapping\r\npopulations of chickpea were deployed in the aforesaid\r\ncombinatorial genomic approaches. These analyses delineated\r\n12 novel alleles and six haplotypes from 10 transcription factor\r\ngenes and 16 major QTLs/eQTLs governing yield and stress tolerance\r\ntraits that were mapped on 10 ultra-high density chickpea\r\ngenetic linkage maps. The superior natural alleles/haplotypes of\r\ntwo major genes (QTLs) regulating seed weight and pod/seed\r\nnumber identified from cultivated and wild Cicer gene pools are\r\nbeing introduced into multiple high-yielding Indian varieties of\r\nchickpea for its marker-assisted genetic improvement. The potential\r\nmolecular signatures delineated using integrated genomics-\r\nassisted breeding strategies have functional significance to\r\nunderstand the molecular genetic mechanism and natural allelic\r\ndiversity-led domestication pattern underlying these complex\r\nquantitative traits at a genome-wide scale, leading to fast-paced\r\ntranslational genomics for chickpea genetic enhancement.\r\nThese essential outcomes will be useful for devising the most\r\nefficient strategies to produce high-yielding climate-resilient\r\nchickpea cultivars for sustaining global food security."^^ .
