"Among the various cool season pulses grown in India, chickpea\r\n(Cicer arietinum L.) occupies an important position in rainfed\r\nagriculture. Chickpea is largely grown (>67% area) on conserved/\r\nresidual moisture, contributing about 45% to the total\r\npulses production in India. Being a rainfed crop, it often faces\r\nterminal drought stress. When chickpea sowing is delayed in\r\nfields vacated by paddy in the presence of terminal heat, soil\r\nmoisture stress further limits its productivity. This necessitates\r\nthe adoption of suitable strategies to alleviate per se drought\r\ntolerance in chickpea. Two main strategies, integrated breeding\r\nand transgenic technology, have been adopted for developing\r\ndrought-tolerant varieties. The third potential strategy is\r\nutilization of nanotechnology, which has not been tried under\r\nIndian NARES. Systematic breeding efforts resulted in development\r\nof varieties having per se drought tolerance (RSG 44, Vijay,\r\nRSG 888, JG 74, Pusa 2024), and escape (JG 11, JG 16, JSC\r\n56, IPC 2006-77 etc.) exploiting earliness. QTLs responsible\r\nfor drought tolerance have been identified in chickpea genotype\r\nICC 4958, which have been transferred, and drought-tolerant\r\nelite breeding lines have been developed. MAGIC and\r\nNAM populations combining drought and heat tolerance are\r\nnow becoming available for identification of elite breeding lines\r\nhaving combined tolerance to both stresses for their possible\r\nrelease. Exploitation of transgenic technology using DREB\r\ngene has also shown promise. The use of nano-particles in enhancing\r\nroot development and growth vigour in chickpea has\r\nopened the doors for exploitation of nanotechnology for alleviation\r\nof per se drought tolerance."^^ .
