"Stay-green is the best characterized trait contributing to the\r\nadaptation of sorghum to postflowering drought conditions.\r\nUsing B35 as stay-green donor, QTL introgression lines (ILs)\r\nwere generated in two genetic backgrounds (S35 and R16).\r\nThese lines along with local checks, recurrent parent and staygreen\r\ndonor were evaluated in two years during the post-rainy\r\nseason under both well-watered (WW) and water-stressed\r\n(WS) conditions at four locations. Stay-green ILs had improvement\r\nin green leaf area retention at maturity (GLAM) in both\r\ngenetic backgrounds under both WW and WS, and more so\r\nunder WS condition. R16 was more responsive to the QTL introgression\r\nthan S35 in terms of GLAM, suggesting that effect\r\nof individual stay-green QTL introgression interacted with genetic\r\nbackgrounds. Stg3B was the key stay-green QTL in enhancing\r\nthe GLAM, particularly under WS conditions. Under\r\nWS conditions, the introgressions with Stg3B improved grain\r\nyield (GY) and total dry matter (TDM) by 16% and 9%, respectively\r\nover recurrent parent. No improvement in GY and TDM\r\nwas recorded in ILs compared to recurrent parent under WW\r\nconditions in S35 background, while 8% increase in both GY\r\nand TDM was recorded under WS conditions with Stg3B introgressions\r\nin S35 background. The recipient genetic background\r\nand soil moisture conditions during postflowering growth stages\r\nplayed an important role in the expression of stay-green\r\nQTLs. Our results, also clearly established the superiority of\r\nStg3B in enhancing the GY and TDM accumulation over other\r\nindividual QTLs or in combination under both the genetic backgrounds,\r\nparticularly under WS conditions."^^ .
