"Increasing the efficiency of water conversion into biomass (TE)\r\nis in focus for improvement of crop productivity under water-\r\nlimited environments. The last ID conference highlighted\r\nthat stomatal regulation under high vapor pressure can increase\r\nTE, which represented a new opportunity for crop improvement.\r\nWhile increasing TE leads to enhanced crop production\r\nunder drought stress, managing water to assure its availability\r\nfor the grain filling period is necessary. Particularly, we will\r\nfocus on traits that alter the crop water-use profile during the\r\nseason (e.g. canopy size and development), increase TE (e.g.\r\ncanopy conductivity and structure), or achieve both. For these\r\nwater-use related traits, the range of genetic variability has been\r\nexplored and this allowed designing crops suitable for either\r\nagro-systems intensification or resilience. Yet, the interactions\r\nof physiological processes responsible for plant water use with\r\nenvironments are not fully understood and this talk will provide\r\nan update on these aspects. We will also show how the crop and\r\nsocio-economic models are used to quantify the benefits and\r\nevaluate the trade-offs associated with different crop water-use\r\nstrategies in semi-arid tropics agro-ecologies. Results indicate\r\nthat variation in water-use related traits is frequently associated\r\nwith grain versusstover production trade-offs. Therefore, the\r\neconomic value of a particular technology intervention depends\r\non the nature and type of commodity demand within the specific\r\nagro-system. We will discuss the possibilities of enhancing\r\nthe crop value in the systems with high demand for staple food\r\ngrains ormore complex dual purpose (food and fodder) crop production\r\nsystems."^^ .
