bibo:abstract "The importance of crop genetic improvement research\r\nis demonstrated by the Green Revolution,\r\nwhich led to a rapid increase in food production\r\nin Asia. Those productivity gains contributed to\r\na reduction in poverty directly through increased\r\nfarm-household income and indirectly through\r\na long-term decline in the prices of food grains,\r\nwhich account for a large share of poor consumers’\r\nexpenditure. The success of crop genetic improvement\r\nresearch that led to the development of improved\r\nvarieties of food crops is well documented\r\n(Evenson and Gollin, 2003; Bantilan et al., 2013).\r\nDespite the rapid progress made in the past,\r\npoverty is still concentrated in South Asia with\r\naround 571 million or one-third of the world’s\r\npoor, estimated at about 1.29 billion in 2011\r\n(World Bank, 2012). Substantial scope exists for\r\nfurther reducing poverty through crop genetic\r\nimprovement by increasing or stabilizing the\r\nyield of major food crops, particularly the dryland\r\ncrops in South Asia. Modern varietal change\r\nby itself may not lift large numbers of people out\r\nof poverty, but greater dynamism in this area\r\ncan go a long way toward moving poor people\r\ncloser to that threshold.
