"Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.]\r\nexhibits enormous genetic diversity in the global\r\ngermplasm collection. The pearl millet core collection\r\n(~10% of the entire collection), with 2094\r\naccessions, is still large for precise evaluation to\r\nidentify parents for a genetic improvement program.\r\nA minicore collection of pearl millet comprising\r\n238 accessions was constituted by using\r\ndata on 10 qualitative and 8 quantitative traits of\r\n2094 core collection accessions. The hierarchical\r\ncluster analysis of data using a phenotypic\r\ndistance matrix resulted in 136 clusters. A proportional\r\nsampling strategy with 10% or a minimum\r\nof one accession from each cluster was\r\nused to form the minicore collection. The comparison\r\nof data in the minicore and core collections\r\nusing various statistical parameters, such\r\nas homogeneity of distribution for geographical\r\norigin and frequency classes of qualitative traits,\r\nmeans, median, within and between-accession\r\nvariances, diversity index, and phenotypic correlations,\r\nindicated that almost the entire genetic\r\nvariation present in the core collection was captured\r\nin the minicore collection. The possible\r\nimpact of high between- and within-accession\r\nvariability in pearl millet on maintenance of\r\ngenebank accessions is discussed. With its\r\ngreatly reduced size, the pearl millet minicore\r\ncollection can be used for precise evaluation of\r\ntraits of agronomic importance and biotic and\r\nabiotic stresses as well as mapping with molecular\r\nmarkers for identifi cation of trait-specifi c\r\ngermplasm and discovery of new genes."^^ .
