Abstract

Leaf anatomy of Pennisetum americanum mutants IP6534, IP10154 (both from Mali) and J561 (from India) was studied. The normal leaf blade has a deep groove on the abaxial side and is curved inward, while a prominent midrib is present on the adaxial side. In the mutants, both adaxial and abaxial sides are alike, the leaf blades being flat and ribbon-like. The mutant leaves droop characteristically and are distinguishable from emergence to maturity. The main difference in leaf anatomy is that a prominent keel of parenchymatous tissue, present in normal leaves, is lacking in the mutants. The amount of sclerenchymatous tissue associated with the larger vascular bundles was reduced in the mutants; fewer vascular bundles were also noted in the mutants
