Abstract

Analysis of D2 values based on chromosome pair arm ratios for nine diploid Arachis taxa revealed two groups, one represented solely by A. batizocoi. In the larger group, A. villosa and A. correntina were closely related karyotypically and on D2 distance, while A. cardenasii formed a distinct subgroup differing from other species in that chromosome 10 is longer. This grouping was confirmed by canonical analysis. Most of the variation between the diploid species was attributed to chromosome pairs 1, 7, 8 and 9. On the basis of karyotype symmetry, A. villosa and A. correntina, which have arm ratios close to 1, are considered the most primitive diploid species and A. batizocoi, which has one chromosome pair with a subterminal centromere, the most advanced. The tetraploids A. monticola and A. hypogaea were karyotypically similar, although there was a difference in the number of chromosome pairs with a secondary constriction. Karyotype similarities, especially between chromosomes with secondary constriction, suggest that A. cardenasii is an ancestor of the tetraploid species
