Abstract

In recent years, pigeonpea has become a very popular crop in the Punjab and Haryana State, India. The crop is grown solely, in rotation with cereal crops, and usually without irrigation except for one initial application. Farmers are turning to pigeonpea because of low capital input and its ability to improve and protect the soil. Average yields of approximately 700-800 kg/ha are obtained. Farmers report little or no disease damage in existing plantings. Present concerns include improving yield to at least 1500 kg/ha and providing a short-duration cultivar that matures in about 120 days. New cultivars are being identified and tested, and early solutions to the problems of yield and maturation promise a new revolution in pulse production in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh
