Abstract
The paper emphasizes the importance of agricultural production in rainfed areas in India and identifies various constraints to crop production in such areas. It also discusses the strategy for increasing production through integrated and efficient management of soil moisture, plant nutrients and high-yielding varieties. It is argued that the potential for crop production in the area is three to five times greater than present production. What is required is the use of appropriate technology
