Abstract
In a series of trials in 1968-70 at Samaru to study the effect of stand density of long-season dwarf photosensitive cultivars and hybrids on yield and to determine the optimum stand density for maximum yields, good yields were obtained over a range of 50 000-90 000 plants/ha and the optimum harvest density was about 65 000/ha. This is double the optimum population for best yields of long-season tall photosensitive cultivars. The average grain yield of the dwarf cv. 2123 in 1970 where stem-borers were controlled was 4.3 t/ha
