Abstract

SDMV89004 was developed by the South African Development Community and ICRISAT Sorghum and Millet Improvement Programme at Matopos and Muzarabani, Zimbabwe, from an early maturing composite population derived by random mating of 174 mid-season varieties. It is medium in height (1.7-2.2 m), flowers in 50-60 days and matures in 80-90 days producing 3-5 productive tillers per plant. Its panicles are 25-30 cm long, compact and non-bristled, with moderate resistance to ergot [Claviceps purpurea], smut [Tolyposporium penicillariae] and downy mildew [Sclerospora graminicola]. The grain is obovate and grey, with a vitreous endosperm and a 1000-seed weight of 8.3-11.3 g. It gave mean yields of 2.28-2.81 t/ha, 40% more than local cultivars in station trials over 4 years (1988-91) in Zimbabwe, and more than 100% more in communal areas over 2 years (1990-91). It is recommended for semi-arid regions (Natural Regions IV and V) of Zimbabwe.
