Abstract

TSPM91018, also known as Okoa, is a new variety of Pennisetum glaucum developed by the South African Development Community/ICRISAT Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program at Matapos Research Station, Zimbabwe from a local population, Halale, which was identified in yield trials involving 961 populations during the 1988-89 cropping season. Sibbing of Halale in an isolation block produced 200 S1 progenies from which the top yielding 7.5% were recombined by hand-sibbing in a diallel fashion to constitute TSPM91018. It was progressively improved by recurrent selection from 1991, and the newest improved version was widely tested for grain yield and pest resistance in Tanzania during 1991-94, where it gave a mean yield of 2.31 t/ha, outyielding Serere 17 and local cultivars by 49.6 and 47.6%, respectively. It is medium tall (1.8-2.8 m), flowers in 55-60 days and matures in 87-92 days. Its panicles are long (34-55 cm), cylindrical, loose and non-bristled. The grain is bold, obovate and straw coloured and the average-1000 seed weight is 11.2-13.8 g. It gave 49.6% better yields than the control Serere 17 and 47.6% better yields than local cultivars. TSPM91018 is recommended for semi-arid regions in Tanzania, especially the Central Plateau.
