Abstract

The total production of grain legumes in the world in 1978 was estimated at 161 million mt or 10.2 per cent of the total cereals produced2 which was grown on 155 million ha or 20.5 per cent of the total area planted to cereals. In the region of particular concern for the APO, i.e., the developing market economies of East Asia,3 the trend is similar. In the same year a total of 23 million mt of grain legumes or 8.6 per cent of the total quantity of cereals were produced in the region on an area of 38 million ha or 22.9 per cent of the total area planted to cereals.
