Abstract

A new short-duration, early chickpea cultivar ICCV 96029 was developed and tested in comparison with long duration control cultivars in Hisar, Haryana, India in 1997/98 and 1998/99. This cultivar flowered and matured earlier than the controls, and its reproductive phase was longer by 7-13 days, resulting in the development of better sink for higher harvest index. ICCV 96029 produced pods in January, while control cultivar Pant G-114 started podding only in February.
