Abstract

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum [P. americanum]) leaves bearing S. graminicola oospores were ground and soaked in water for 9 h, drained, and the oospores then suspended in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 12 h in the dark. Spores were resuspended in water, and incubated for germination at 25°C. Although germination was observed after 1 h of NaOCl treatment, max. germination occurred after 12 h. Oospores remained viable for up to 13 years, but max. germination (76%) occurred with 1 year old spores, and decreased to <10% for 6 year old spores. Oospore-concn also influenced germination; 40% germination occurred at 0.2 mg oospores/10 ml water, increased to 60% in 2 mg oospores/10 ml water and then decreased, with little or no germination at 14 mg/10 ml. Opt. temp. for germination was 25°C. The implication of these results is discussed.
