Abstract

Derived from a single F6 plant selected from an interspecific cross between the pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) cultivar Baigani and a wild relative of pigeon pea, Atylosia scarabaeoides, ICPL87162 (PI593894) was released in 1993 because of the higher protein content of its dhal (dehusked split seed) compared with all other available pigeon pea cultivars in India. Mean protein content of dhal was 32% in 1985 and 31.1% in 1986. ICPL87162 is resistant to sterility mosaic disease.
