Abstract
Amutant with cleistogamous-type flowers was isolated from the progeny of a cross between Cajanus cajan cv. T21 and Atylosia lineata. It is characterized by anthers in a non-diadulphous configuration and the keel petal partly surrounding the standard petal and enfolding the 2 wing petals, thus delaying flower opening until after fertilization. The gene controlling the character is recessive. In 2 field trials, plots of the mutant were flanked with plots of normal flowered plants; flower type was examined in the progeny. Natural outcrossing rates of 0.02-0.4% were obtained in one field and 1.09-4.3% in the other. The low rates were attributed to the delay in floral bud opening failing to attract insect pollinators., Amutant with cleistogamous-type flowers was isolated from the progeny of a cross between Cajanus cajan cv.
