Abstract
Attempts to breed sorghum for salinity tolerance are limited owing to the complexity in screening for and inheritance of salinity tolerance. Salinity tolerance at germination/seedling emergence and establishment is not correlated with that in later stages. Combining germination/seedling tolerance with that of adult-plant tolerance is necessary to enhance whole-crop tolerance to salinity stress in sorghum. In this article we have reviewed and discussed the screening methods and selection criteria used to breed sorghum for salinity tolerance using conventional tools and the future strategies for genetic improvement of sorghum for salinity tolerance are outlined., This article is a pre-print., Attempts to breed sorghum for salinity tolerance are limited owing to the complexity in screening for and inheritance of salinity tolerance.
