Abstract
The Pennisetum americanum lines ICMA1 and ICMB1 were developed by γ-irradiation (30 kR) of Tift 23DB. The male sterility of ICMA1 is stably expressed over sites and seasons, with good grain set under open pollination. ICMB1 is a profuse pollen shedder. Both lines are resistant to Sclerospora graminicola. In 2 preliminary yield trials of hybrids made with common pollinators on ICMA1 and 5141A, the hybrids on ICMA1 yielded significantly more than those on 5141A; they were also slightly taller and later, tillered less but had longer heads and larger grains and tended to lodge less. ICMA1 carries the d2 dwarfing gene and so can be used to produce hybrids with a wide range of heights. Both lines have compact heads and light gray grains with a 1000-grain weight of about 7 g.
