Abstract

Pearl millet (Pennisctwn glaucum (L.) R. Bt) is known by various names in different Iangwages: pearI, bulrush, cattail, or spiked millet in EngIish; bajra in Hindi; dukhn in Arabic; and mil a chandelles in French. In India, Arabia, and Africa, pearl millet has been cultivated as a forage or cereal crop for at least 3,W years. Pearl millet originated in Africa and was subsequently introduced into Tndia. Some are searchers 'believe that millets were the first cubtivat4 crops to be used for human food in prehistoric times (10). The world area cropped to pearl millet is about 26 million hectares. The crop is grown on the poorest soils and under harsh ctimatic conditions where no other crop can grow. Therefore, pearl millet is the food of the poorest of the poor. Although the crop i s quite hardy, it still suffers from various biotic stresses. One of the major biotic yield-reducing factors is the disease downy mildew, caused by Sclemspom graminicoIa (Sacc.)
