Abstract

Variations in plant pathogenic fungi arise largely through sexual processes, heterozygosity and somatic recombination, mutation, and selection. Large shifts in pathogenicity occur due to changes in host cultivar and environment. The amount of genetic variation in the pathogen population influences its ability to adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions and the changing host cultivars. In general, highly variable populations are better adapted than those with little variation. Pathogenicity or virulence has been used as the genetic marker in all studies where variability has been assessed through virulence surveys, using host differentials containing different resistance genes.
