Abstract

Percentage germination, water absorption and electrical conductivity of grain leachates were determined during grain development in 47 germplasm lines and 3 standard cultivars. There was significant variation among genotypes for grain fresh and dry weights and moisture contents at all sampling times, and at 40 days after anthesis percentage water uptake ranged from 3 to 37%. Variation in electrical conductivity of grain leachates was greater than for water uptake. Some genotypes could germinate only 10-15 days after anthesis while others would only germinate after 30-35 days.
