Abstract

To obtain information on germination of short season pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan] varieties ICPL4, ICPL151, ICPL85024 and ICPL87093, seeds were harvested from plants 21, 28 and 35 days after flowering, and assessed for subsequent germination. Large varietal differences were observed in the germination of 21 day-old seeds, with ICPL151 and ICPL85024 germinating poorly (2 and 15%, respectively) and ICPL87093 and ICPL4 germinating well (89 and 78%, respectively). In samples harvested after 35 days, 100% germination was achieved in all varieties. The same 4 varieties were also grown in a generation turnover greenhouse trial for 1 year from June 1989. By harvesting seed 25-35 days after flowering and directly sowing, 4 generations were raised successfully within 1 year. Number of days to 50% flowering, days to harvest and percentage seed germination was measured for each generation. Number of days to flowering was influenced by sowing date in each of the 4 lines, with sowings in September taking 53 days, and November/December sowings taking 63.5 days to flower, respectively. Mean generation times for ICPL85024, ICPL87093, ICPL51 and ICPL4 were 78.25, 83.25, 91.75, and 87.25 days, respectively. Over 90% mean seed germination was recorded in ICPL87093, ICPL151 and ICPL4 showing that 2 additional generations can be grown each year at ICRISAT Asia Center under natural conditions, if developing seeds are harvested.
