Abstract

Results are presented of screening 13 accessions of C. platycarpus for resistance to blight (Phytophthora drechsleri f.sp. cajani), Fusarium wilt [Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris], cyst nematodes [Heterodera cajani] and pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PSMV) in greenhouse trials. To determine resistance to insect pests, accessions were sown at ICRISAT Asia Center in June 1992 and pods examined at maturity for damage by pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera) and podfly (Melanagromyza obtusa). Screening for Phytophthora blight revealed large variation in resistance to the disease, with ICPW61, ICPW65, ICPW69 and ICPW71 unaffected, whilst ICPW60 was as susceptible as controls. There was no recorded incidence of Fusarium wilt but this may have been due to the early maturing of the crop (90 days) and avoidance of infection. ICPW62 and ICPW69 were the cultivars most resistant to cyst nematodes. In general, resistance to pod borer was low and none of the lines recorded more than 26% damage. ICPW62 was the most resistant accession in terms of total pod damage by pod borer and podfly (27.7%). Overall, ICPW62 was identified as most resistant to the pests and diseases tested.
