Abstract
In 1990 the country's major growing areas Yangon, Pegu, Magwe, Mandalay and Sagaing were the object of a seed-collecting campaign in which 97 samples of chickpea, 2 of pigeonpea and 3 of Rhynchosia bracteata were collected from locally grown stocks in fields, with the collecting sites normally separated at intervals of at least 5 km unless an obvious diversity was noticed. Desi type chickpea with yellow or brown seed was most common, although some kabuli types were also grown. The "Karachi" variety, first introduced in 1920, is highly heterogeneous, with semispreading and semierect types most common.
