Abstract

In the early chickpea variety CPS1 planted in mid-December, time taken to flower was reduced by ten days when day length was increased to 24 h and by a further three days through treatment with foliar nutrient sprays containing nitrogen and phosphorus. Under 24 h days 18 cultivars, planted in mid-January and normally taking 32-74 days to flower, flowered in 32-34 days. Under 12 h days only early cultivars survived to flower and mature. Growth period could be shortened by exposure to day lengths of 24 h up to flowering but there was no advantage in continuing exposure to long days after flowering.
