Abstract

Roots inoculated with R. bataticola [Macrophomina phaseolina] showed disintegration of cortical tissues while mycelium and sclerotial bodies plugging the xylem were seen in longitudinal sections. The sudden collapse of infected plants at the pod-filling stage may be due to this plugging of the xylem vessels.
