Abstract

The area of chickpea cultivation in Morocco in 1985 was less than a third of what it was in 1974, having been replaced by sunflowers. Landraces are thus threatened. A collecting expedition organized by INRA, Morocco, with ICRISAT and ICARDA was undertaken in June and July 1987. The kabuli type was predominant, but there were usually 1-2% and sometimes up to 10% desi types seen as an admixture in farmers' fields. Collection sites were about 5 km apart and 122 seed samples were collected including one from a twin-podded large-seeded type. These lines are now maintained at gene banks at ICRISAT and ICARDA.
