Abstract

Sporulation of the downy mildew pathogen on Pennisetum americanum was completed in c. 6 h. High RH (95-100%) was only essential during the last 3 h. Max. sporulation occurred when infected leaves were incubated for 6-12 h at 30°C prior to exposure to high RH. Sporulation occurred from 10-30° with an opt. at 20°. Sporulation occurred well in fluorescent light (200 lux), in the dark and in near-UV light (160 lux). The size of sporangia and sporangiophores was affected by temp. and the largest were produced at 25 and 15°, respectively. The implications of these results are discussed.
