Abstract

Agriculture faces significant challenges from current and future climate changes, pathogen and pest outbreaks, a rapidly growing population, and other environmental stresses. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a vital staple crop for some of the world's poorest and most food-insecure populations, cultivated in over 110 countries and supporting millions of livelihoods globally. This versatile crop is grown for grain, feed, forage, sweet stem, and biofuel production, particularly in heat- and drought-prone environments. However, like other crops, sorghum is vulnerable to biotic stresses such as diseases and insect pests, as well as abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, heat, and alkalinity. Crop wild relatives (CWRs) serve as reservoirs of valuable genes that can enhance sorghum productivity and resilience under changing climatic conditions. Despite challenges in transferring genes from secondary and tertiary gene pools to the primary gene pool, advancements in breeding techniques and technologies have enabled significant progress. Recent breakthroughs have facilitated the introgression of beneficial alleles from CWRs, leading to improved sorghum productivity. This book chapter provides an overview of the potential of CWRs and revolutionary breeding approaches to enhance sorghum yield and productivity in the face of evolving global challenges.
