The genotype by environment (GxE) interaction for grain yield is generally high in the semi-arid tropics (SAT) because of unreliable and highly variable climatic conditions and the variable influence of pests and diseases. The international multi-environment trials (IMETs) play an important role in identification and distribution of high-yielding genotypes and serve as a link between ICRISAT and National Agricultural Research System (NARS) scientists. This chapter gives an overview of IMETs conducted at ICRISAT. The way IMETs have been conducted and analysed until now, has favoured the distribution of material with high grain yield under favourable environments. The reason is that most of the materials included in the IMETs are advanced breeding materials selected at ICRISAT Asia Center. In addition, the analyses that have been performed on the IMETs, mainly linear regression analyses, favoured the identification of genetic material with a high response to agricultural inputs. The future IMETs should have two main objectives:(i) identification of genotypes with a high grain yield in certain defined zones of adaptation, and (ii) seed dissemination. Since these objectives need different types of material, two types of IMETs are proposed: a screening nursery, used for seed dissemination and identification of desirable plant traits required by collaborators, and a yield trial, which is strategic in nature and is primarily aimed at describing plant responses to environmental conditions. The type of material included in these trials has to depend on the type of adaptation required (broad versus specific). A tight link between these two IMETs, with the results of one being used as a feedback for the other, combined with strategic data collection, should provide future IMETs of ICRISAT with a clearer focus than in the past.
