Abstract
The performance of pearl millet male sterile F1 line derived from the cross ICMB 97444 × ICMB 95111, as well as its inbred parental lines was determined in a field experiment conducted in Andhra Pradesh, India during the rainy season of 2001 and post-rainy season of 2002. The inbred parental lines recorded similar mean yields which was 18% higher than the control cultivar, 843B. The male sterile F1 recorded 22% higher mean yield compared to the inbred line ICMB 97444. The hybrid flowered 2 days later than 843B, whereas the parental lines flowered 3-5 days later. The hybrid and its parents were highly resistant to 4 pathotypes (from Patancheru, Durgapura, Jalna and Jamnagar) of downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola), with ICMB recording the highest resistance (0-1.3% disease incidence).
